“Want my amazing marketing/sales/copywriting formula that has made tens of millions of dollars?”

Magical formulas can be awfully tempting. But there’s a massive problem with them…
They ignore the single most important part of your marketing.
For example, when you buy these formulas, they give you structure and templates for how to deliver your messaging.
You generally end up with a mad-libs thing to fill out like this:
If you are tired of [INSERT STRUGGLE] you’ll love this! [PRODUCT NAME] will help you [INSERT RESULT] so you can [INSERT DEEP DESIRE].
Filling out stuff like this out can work to a degree. Because it forces you to focus on your customer. And it gets you to deliver your message in a logical way.
But there is a massive problem…
It’s that formulas and templates like these leave out the most important part of your copy!
The stuff in the brackets — your customer’s struggle, desires, etc. — that’s what matters most.
A lot of these formulas force you to guess what those things are. Or they give you vague advice like “talk to your customers!” If you don’t know that info, you’re dead in the water.
Now you may think “But I know my customers super well. I know their pains, desires, etc.”
Awesome! But there’s another trap you may fall into…
You see, often the information we have about our customers is a superficial version of what is really going on. There are deeper problems, pains, desires, etc. that we’re not hitting.
For example, I wrote a sales page last Friday night. It was for a product to help moms who are struggling because their kids won’t get along.
When I started I thought I understood the problem: Kids get in fights and hit each other and scream because they’re kids, right?
But then, I went through some of the quotes and stories from our audience.
I noticed some key ways moms talked about the problems that I had totally missed.
For example, they talked about how their kids would purposely push each other’s buttons. Or how one would always boss the other around. Or how “it’s like they’re annoyed by each other’s breathing”.
Going over all this totally changed my copy.
The bit about “pushing each other’s buttons” made the headline. The line about “being annoyed by each other’s breathing” became my first line of copy. And I made sure to include bossiness when describing the problems they face.
Instead of lame, generic copy like “Do your kids fight a lot?” I used these quotes and stories to add some razzle-dazzle and get to the real heart of the matter.
The difference is targeting specific emotions rather than a generalized version of it. And using the customer’s own words to ensure we’re hitting the right points and saying it the right way.
With that, your message hits deeper. And your copy generates more sales.
And THAT is what is missing from templates and formulas. The actual words and emotions of your customers.
At least, that’s what used to be missing…
